Land of swamps and semipantanos
The exotic territory, in addition to being benefited by its natural landscape, also serves as a permanent home and natural refuge for hundreds of migratory birds from North America, enjoys the benefit of a fauna rarely seen anywhere on earth such as the Cuban crocodile, diversity of amphibians and other reptiles.
The Ciénaga de Zapata is recognized as a National Park and is currently legally supported by Decree 197/96 of the Manatí Turquino Plan, which declares the entire Zapata Marsh Special Region for Sustainable Development. It has an area of 4,500 km2. It has one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the country and the largest area of marshes and marshes in Cuba, approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a Biosphere Reserve and also declared a Ramsar Site.
Viven en ellas varios representantes de la fauna marina, incluyendo corales y peces. La zona constituye un ecosistema húmedo o tierras muy humedecidas que hoy son objeto de gran interés para la protección ambiental, pues la Ciénaga de Zapata y otras costeras de Cuba constituyen verdaderos laboratorios naturales y un ecosistema muy saludable en este entorno cubano.
El Parque se encuentra cubierto de bosques exóticos, ríos, lagos, cavernas inundadas, piscinas naturales, zonas vírgenes y sabanas típicas de ciénaga que brinda refugio al 30 por ciento de la fauna autóctona de Las Antillas Mayores.
El humedal se caracteriza por la presencia de formidables espesores de turba y una estructura de fallas profundas que han condicionado la existencia de dos bloques bien definidos: La Ciénaga Occidental y la Ciénaga Oriental de Zapata. La primera constituye un bloque más definido donde predomina el tipo de costa acumulativa mientras, que en el bloque oriental la costa es de tipo abrasiva y más elevada. Este sitio posee el área más grande y mejor conservada de las islas del Caribe.
La cuenca de Zapata es uno de los mayores y más complicados sistemas de drenaje cárstico del país. Para aumentar este atractivo se encuentran cavernas muy profundas cerca de la costa sur, en las que las aguas varían desde dulces arriba hasta totalmente saladas en las profundidades.
